As India fights to stay afloat amidst the COVID 19 lockdown, the elderly are struggling to simply survive. Senior citizens have been the worst hit, as they are the most vulnerable especially those above 80 years of age who are at a high risk of succumbing to COVID 19. As per CDC, it is as high as 14.8%. For those above 70 years, it is 8%. In India, the government has been pro-active in taking a number of steps. Despite this, there is so much still to be done, as our numbers are huge.
Udbhav Public Charitable Trust is reaching out to the elders, homeless and migrant workers who are facing their toughest time right now. In our first phase of work before the lockdown even started, was Awareness about Covid 19, both in urban & rural areas, through our Mobile Healthcare Units & Helpline services UPCT is connected with a wide network of Senior Citizens Associations in cities, our teams have been calling and reaching out to elders and giving them vital information about the Pandemic, Health Advisories of the Do’s & Don’ts, shared emergency numbers, and details of hospitals with Isolation wards, etc. As elders are the most vulnerable, they are bound to have high anxiety levels. The aim was also to let them know, that they are not alone. UPCT, with the help of volunteers, is addressing elder emergency needs during the lockdown, such as groceries, medicines, etc, and getting them delivered to their doorsteps across the states.

Meanwhile, our teams on the ground are working hard during the lockdown, reaching out to the disadvantaged elders, the homeless, migrant workers, and poor living urban slums & villages, providing them with the following: Free Meals for Survival – to the homeless in night shelters, on roads, elders in old age homes, in urban slums and migrant daily wage laborers who have nowhere and no one to turn to. Most elders or earning members in their family, have lost their livelihood, during this period and don’t have enough food to survive. More than 1,00,000 of these meals have been distributed. Family Survival Kits – which include basic ration like Rice, Wheat, Spices, cooking oil, etc. along with Corona protective gear like masks, bathing, and washing soaps, for disadvantaged elders and their family of 5. This package has been made in consultation with the communities of the elderly. During these difficult times, we have seen the vulnerable elderly come forward to help their peers. Elder Village Level Federations (Elder-Self-Help-Groups) have dipped into their own savings to provide ration support to the destitute and widows in their villages. Protective Hygiene Kits for our elders & their family, to fight COVID 19 which include Sanitizers, Mask, Tissues, Handwash, etc..
