Floods and Rain Affect 300,000 in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. 17 July 2020. Flooding in the state of Bihar in northeastern India has affected over 200,000 people and landslides in several regions.
Agricultural lands were destroyed, crops were submerged underwater, and huge economic losses were incurred by the farmers. The floods also resulted in an increase in food prices, making it difficult for the poor to secure even one meal a day. The impact on animal husbandry was equally severe.
Udbhav Public Charitable Trust responded to the destruction and loss caused by the flooding and landslides, in Muzaffarpur, promptly and in a concerted manner.
Flood survivors reached in Muzaffarpur and Patna districts of Bihar.
Project participants were provided training and employment through livelihood interventions.
People benefitted from payments provided against repairing Anganwadi centres and schools.
Small and medium enterprise owners were given business restorations support.
Immediately after the massive devastation that the floods had caused in the northern districts of Bihar, where an estimated 2 million people were severely affected, the UPCT - conscious of its responsibility towards society, launched an immediate Relief Campaign to provide the flood-affected families with a ‘Family Relief Kit’. The Relief Kit comprised 14 essential goods, 7 food, and 11 first aid and utility items.
The Trustees has shared there views at the campaign launch, “Considering the sheer magnitude of devastations in Bihar, we are aware that the Indian administrative system cannot provide relief and rehabilitation to everyone. In this hour of national crisis, it is the duty of each one of us to contribute to the cause”
Motivated UPCT's members, faculty, staff and alumni donated generously to this cause, and lent help to wipe away the tears of the unfortunate victims. This campaign was another social upliftment project by UPCT – an NGO in Special Consultative Status with UN (ECOSOC).
Udbhav Public Charitable Trust responded in 12 panchayats and 314 villages in Muzaffarpur and Darbhanga were selected as the areas of intervention because they were amongst the worst-affected districts.
As per the organisation’s mission and humanitarian mandate, UPCT focussed on helping single women-headed households, households with pregnant and lactating mothers, persons with disabilities, sole survivors of families, and people from socially excluded tribes and Dalit communities.
